Haitian Paintings & Masks

Margot’s' Gallery is proud to introduce the bright, rhythmic and alluring art of Haiti.

From the early days of this nation, painters, mask makers and folk artists alike, have depicted political events - each work fulfilling their dreams of heroism and grandeur; their thirst for revolt and freedom.

Common themes in Haitian paintings range from buzzing communal activities such as working together in fields, busy marketplaces, and Mardi-Gras bands, to the natural environment and landscapes bold with the lush colors of the forests and deep seas, to the enigmatic image of woman - as mother, protector, healer and merchant.

As with the colorful and culturally conscious Haitian paintings, Haitian masks also celebrate Haiti's rich landscape. These fanciful works of art offer brilliantly colored jungle animals that can't help but bring a smile to all who view them.

Each animal mask is created using a papier mache' method but rather than using paper, recycled cement bags are used and placed over chicken wire, creating the alluring menagerie. Masks of people are made of carefully hand tooled leather.
